Sanofi drops proposal to Sell Diet Drug Acomplia (Rimonabant) in United States

Sanofi-Aventis has dropped its application for approval of diet drug acomplia temporarily in the United States on June 29, 2007.

Sanofi-Aventis took this step for temporarily approval of the weight loss diet pill in the United States after rejection of the sale of diet pill in United States by the FDA's expert advisory committee because of rimonabant’s link to risk of depression and suicidality.

Sanofi said they will start necessary discussions with the FDA to find out the necessary data required to submit the application.

The company also added that they are dedicated to make all efforts to make rimonabant available to patients in the U.S.

The weight loss diet pill rimonabant has been approved for sale in 42 countries which is the first weight loss drug which functions by blocking CB-1 receptors in the brain.
